Bread Sticks

I got this recipe in my high school home economics class. It has been a favorite since.

1 1/2 cup warm water
1 Tablespoon Yeast (1/2 T. if using SAF yeast)
2 Tablespoons Sugar
1 teaspoons salt
3 to 3 1/2 Cups Bread Flour (I use whole wheat flour)

Topping:
Butter
Parmesan Cheese
Oregano
Garlic Salt or Garlic Supreme

Mix together warm water, sugar, salt and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes or until foamy, (unless using SAF yeast)

(SAF yeast is a fast acting, high potency yeast that can be added directly to your dry ingredients without it having to be activated in water first. SAF Instant Yeast is more than twice as active as regular compressed yeast, allowing you to reduce the amount of yeast called for).

Mix in the flour and knead for 3-5 minutes.  Let rest for 10 minutes.

Melt 1/2 cube of butter on cookie sheet or in a bowl.

Srpay counter top with non stick cooking spray.
Roll dough into a rectangle to 1/2' thick. (As you can tell mine is far from perfect).

Cut dough into strips. A pizza cutter works really well for this.

Fold the dough in half and twist.
Roll in the melted butter on cookie sheet or dip in bowl with butter.
Sprinkle the bread stick with any or all of the following:
Parmesan Cheese
Garlic Salt or Garlic Supreme from Alison's Pantry
Oregano
Raise for 15 minutes. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown in a 350 degree oven.
